Julia’s Bio
“I approach each story with curiosity and empathy. I want to uncover what makes something unique and show that to the world with a cinematic twist.”
Julia C Liu is a Providence, Rhode Island based director, cinematographer and artist, interested in exploring stories that center BIPOC voices. Her love for visual storytelling started through drawing comics, evolving into filmmaking as a way to bring her illustrations to life. Julia directed J.Period X Rakim The Live Mixtape: God MC Edition. She is a contributing director to the New York Times’ Emmy-Nominated Op-Doc series and has directed and shot music videos premiered on Stereogum and NPR Music. In 2020, Driving While Black Magic, her narrative short directorial debut, screened at Urbanworld, Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, and Montreal International Black Film Festival. Julia has spent years working in the camera department, starting out as a camera assistant on hit shows like Girls, White Collar and Person of Interest.
She served as the Director of Photography for the Netflix original documentaries We Are: The Brooklyn Saints and Take Your Pills. Julia is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild and a graduate of Brown Univerisity.
